Equipment makers sensing crisis

Marine equipment manufacturers are increasingly feeling a sense of crisis over the cessation of new orders. It is inevitable that the market will take a contractive tendency in the future, so they are concerned over its effects on their businesses in the distant future.

On top of that, there is strong opinion among these manufacturers that the sales for the current fiscal year will slip by about 10-30% on average in comparison with 2008, when record-high sales were posted.

The present workload will be stable for some more time to come, but the reduction in the unit exports and after-sale services has been quite significant.

These marine equipment manufacturers are now successively making drastic revisions in their initial demand forecasts. It seems that they will continue to exert efforts toward effectively dealing with the backlogged work in order to boost the profitability.

There will also be occasional excess in production capacity against the backdrop of the sharp rise in demand in the past. Further, there are companies conducting studies on the rearrangement of their product lineups and equipment, depending on the line of business.

Japanese marine equipment manufacturers, who supply equipment to domestic and overseas entities, have significantly revised their demand projections this year in light of the changes in the newbuilding market environment.

They have made downward revisions on their production forecasts one after another, omitting the projected increase in demand.
